The actor convinced Carolco Pictures, with whom he had recently worked on Червона спека (1988), to purchase the rights to Total Recall. He saw an opportunity when De Laurentiis' production company, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, went bankrupt. He insisted that someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger was out of the question for the part and even turned down Термінатор (1984) star when Schwarzenegger first expressed interest in the role. Despite the gradual growth of Quaid's imagined virility, there was a limit to how far De Laurentiis was willing to stray from the original character. Over time, the desired machismo of the film's leading man increased, prompting suggestions like William Hurt (courtesy of David Cronenberg who was originally set to direct) and Patrick Swayze. With this characterization in mind, his first choice for the part was Richard Dreyfuss. Dick's short story: A schlubby office drone who dreams of a more exciting life. Producer Dino De Laurentiis' initial vision of the film's hero Douglas Quail/Carl Hauser was decidedly more in line with Philip K. He turns and says to all the other characters, 'It's gonna be fun to play God'".įor some reason, O'Bannon's co-writer Ronald Shusett didn't go for this idea and decided instead to employ the rather hokey 'Mars gets an atmosphere' finale. He is, in effect, a resurrection of the Martian race in a synthetic body. His total recall of his identity is that he is a creation of a Martian machine. ![]() At the end of the picture, Quaid puts his hand on the device and it all comes back to him, who he really is. I thought it was clever to actually have a reason for it. Audiences don't question it when movie heroes go through adventures and don't get killed. That's why they go to all the trouble to erase his brain to make him think he's nobody. He is also omnipotent and because he cannot be killed, Earth wants to kill him but cannot. He cannot be killed because he can anticipate danger before it happens. ![]() The machine killed him and created a synthetic duplicate. Quaid, Earth's top secret agent, went to Mars and entered this compound. That was supposed to have been a print of hand which matched only his hand. ![]() In an interview with Cinefantastique magazine (April 1991) O'Bannon revealed his concept: "That wasn't supposed to be a three-fingered Martian hand print. Dick's concept of memory implants, as outlined in the original short story, 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale'. He felt it had no thematic connection with Philip K. Dan O'Bannon was never happy with the ending that was filmed - the Martian machine creating a breathable atmosphere in 30 seconds flat.
